Hello, my name is Melody Bass and I know from personal experience that dealing with stress can be tough. Trust me I’ve been there. At one time my life was totally out of control. First of all let’s define “Stress”. The Oxford Dictionary writes – pressure or tension; demand on physical or mental energy, distress caused by this or that when stress is experienced a person perceives that the “demands exceed the personal and social resources they are able to mobilize”.

How do you react to STRESS?

Experts tell us that there are two types of instinctive stress responses –
 
Fight-or-Flight or Adapt
anxiety, panic, stress, e book,
 
Let’s talk about these a little more. Fight-or-Flight is more of a short term response. Our adrenaline levels increase as we focus our attention on the threat or stress, to the exclusion of everything else. And within a short period of time we find ourselves, excitable, jumpy and irritable, which in turn leads to a reduced ability to work, operate effectively or able to make wise decisions.

If you associate with this I have some wonderful techniques to keeping this Fight-or-Flight response under control.

Adapt is more of a longer term response and shows up after longer periods of exposure to stress. You learn ways to adapt to the daily stress, but unfortunately this generally leads to these daily stresses increasing and fatigue begins to set in. A popular term for this is “burnout”.

While the above is all true there is a third mechanism that plays a huge part. And that comes from the way that we think and interpret the situations in which we find ourselves.

We find ourselves asking are we feeling threatened by this situation or do we have sufficient capabilities or resources to meet these demands. Self doubt can set in very quickly.

Can you also see that stress can actually trigger a mixture of all of the above? I’m sure you have experienced this, I know I have.
